Going 'Gaga' in a trendy way !

Arecent question on Yahoo Answers read: "Is Lady Gaga inspired by Salvador Dali?". The answer to which was, "Yea i could see that. I think she has created her own surrealism with her appearance and music.".

For those who don't know who Salvador Dali is you in for a treat if you decide to investigate further(wikipedia or exclusive books art reference section), your choice. As for Lady Gaga we all know who she is, and what she's good at.

At this point some of you reading this must be wondering,"What's this guy on about?"

Well, the introduction was purely aimed @ implanting the words Dali and Gaga firmly in your brain and to further serve as a preamble to our first ever interview on CMJCMJ®. That being with one of S.A's fines upcoming design and street gear talent Dali Gaga. He is the founder and chief creative @ GAGA clothing, a SOWETO based Clothing brand which we are hearing and expecting great things from.

Beware of the Dog! This is how it went down (As Is):

Cheese Monkey Joowish: Interview with Dali Gaga of GAGA

Date: 02/05/2010

Venue: The Net

CMJ® : When was GAGA established?

GAGA is as old as my ancestry, GAGA is actually my surname. The GAGA Clothing Brand was established from a need to express my creative ability therefore it is really hard to give time frames of what happened when.

CMJ® : Mischievous provocativeness?

Mischievous Provocativeness is the Ethos of the Brand. It is the ideology behind every design. The concern is to create and provide a specialized product based on creative, innovative and highly conceptual imagery. Every design produced encapsulates this ideology. The aim is to create clothing that is an experience to the consumer. The Gaga Brand is designed to become a visual stimulant and aims to engage with its consumers by evoking an emotional response.

CMJ® : In 2 sentences who is Dali Gaga (the designer and the clothing label boss alike)?

Dali Gaga is a Visual Engineer

CMJ® : Now that we know who Dali Gaga is, are there any other members of the GAGA Brand whose contribution you would like to acknowledge?

The Gaga Brand is made up every person who takes the time to engage with the Brand. Everyone who chooses to become part of the family is important because their input is invaluable.

CMJ® : What does the GAGA brand stand for?

GAGA’ Brand is a multi-national medium that embodies social ideals. We want to become is a social ideology, an extension to mannerism, a rebellion to conformities.

CMJ® : How much of an influence has your home town and upbringing had on your designs?

I have been lucky to grow up in an environment that is diverse. The people where I am from are educated enough to appreciate a quality product. They are also open and embrace new ideas. The people have taken ownership of the Brand and play a pivotal role in where we going.

CMJ® : Your stance on S.A start-up clothing brands and maintaining longevity in the industry?

It is impressive to see the amount of Brands emerging out of Soweto alone. I think we are in an era where people can easily start their own stuff because of the amount of resources available. The only draw-back on this is that some view it as a means of making a quick buck. A lot of local Brands don’t understand Branding. I think longevity is a choice and a strategic one at that.

CMJ® : Brands like Loxion Kulca were some of the first to make it big in SA. However we at CMJ® don’t feel that the brand maintained progressive originality in terms of some product offering.

How important is originality to the GAGA brand? And how much of a role has it played in the success of the brand?

The fashion industry is highly saturated and competitive. There are so many points of reference that it is virtually impossible to stick to the same receipt. We believe in growth and maintaining our values. Business decisions always have a huge impact creativity.

Q: How important do you think the youth’s role is in assisting the local fashion industry to deal with the ever increasing influx of Asian goods especially textiles?

When the local fashion industry decides to aggressively combat the influx of Asian goods, the youth and government will comply. If there is an outcry then people will take notice of the impact Asian product have on us. I think people and business will always look to cut costs, and the Asian provide that which is why they have so successful.

CMJ® : Top Five favorite local start-up clothing brands?
My favorite Brands are based solely on their design and not by how much money and marketing is pumped into them.

Head Honcho

Springleap T shirts

Butan Wear

Gaga ‘Mischevious Provocativeness’

…………We didn’t manage to get to five. I guess we’ll leave that for when next we profile GAGA!

CMJ® : Three design tools you can’t do without?
Fine-liner

Computer

scanner

CMJ®: What is GAGA’s stance on Social Media networks and fashion. Are they a good match and why?

Positive. I think they are a very powerful medium because they are a good marketing tool.

CMJ®: What can people look forward to in the future from GAGA?

Thousands of Crazy Designs!!

CMJ®: It’s been great to have had a chance to pic your brain and we @ CMJ® wish you and the brand all the best in the future. For those who don’t know, how can people get their hands on GAGA apparel?

People can visit our site www.gogaga.co.za

Heita Holller

Hello Everybody

CMJBLK002

Autumn has landed heater sales are up and winter promises to just as much of an ice box. I urge you again don't be left out in the cold when you can get yourself an original CheeseMonkeyJoowish® cardigan. What are you waiting for dial +27 72 912 2419 or tramaele@gmail.com for only 325.00 ZARand.

CMJBLU003

As promised the movement is online with the first 20 unit batch of CMJ cardigans going out as of this week to their happy new owners and ambassadors. We want to thank all those who have placed their orders for their support. CMH® is the future and we are happy that you've decided to become part of it from the get go.

CMJGRA008

With ours being a start up Street Fashion Brand there are and will naturally be a few logistical challenges in the beginning as we find our feet and place them firmly on the street fashion industry. Nobody said this was going to be easy, and it isn't trust me!

CMJORA002

After all this not meant to be one of those mass produced conveyer belt, branded in capitalistic haste and hurled in your face type of Street brands. We are starting the process from scratch, even going as far as taking the liberty of meeting the sheep (down in Ladysmith) whose wool we use; in person, right through to the manual placement of the buttons in our attic (come make shift design studio) in the East of Johannesburg.

CMJPUR003

We hope that didn't come across as too boastful! Then again the intention is not to apologies but to emphasize how seriously we take our products. As economic reports have shown the local textile market needs all the support it can get, with all the Asian imports coming in on the daily. CheeseMonkeyJoowish® is all for locally produced goods and we aren't changing that for anybody ever!

CMJPUR009

We would also like to thank everybody who has shown their support whether directly or indirectly, it’s greatly appreciated. With you and the many more to follow on our side, the sky's the limit. For those that haven't we have appended a few behind the scenes vector images randomly across this post of some of the cardigans that have been ordered. Now is your turn, what are you waiting for....frost bite?

CMJRED002

The Internatinal Fashion Sale

Hi Cheese Monkeys

It's me again the guy who hasn't been updating his blog. The last time on Cheese Monkey Joowish we promised to have an update on the International Fashion Sale (IFS) @ the dome in Randburg. But alas that was not meanT to be as on the last day of the event 28 Feb 2010, we arrived with an intention to trade in Our Mbowenis for Versace's at 08:00pm only to find that the advertised closing time of 10pm was not honoured, "What a waste of time guys mean what you say and vise versa".

I usually prefer going to the fashion sale on the last day since this is the time when most of the traders at the Expo are on a mark down frenzy, believe me I know. I don't know about you but I love getting a bargain? What we got this time however was not what I had bargained for.

After minutes of negotiating with one of the ladies involved with the event (probably a Thebe Investment Group Employee) and her entourage of security guards now turned bouncers I soon realized that this was not going any where and asked her what she would be willing to do for us as loyal customers to the event, since we were obviously mis informed? Without hesitation she quickly agreed to provide all of us out side the door with complementary tickets to the nxt show (IN JUNE). Instead of being elated at the offer I was instead disappointed because I new that the show was still on in side and that I would have to find another way o get rid of my Mboweni's and besided I would have still been willing to payfor the June show. The best she could have done was to sneak the small group of us in. I don't see how that could have been difficult for someone in her position to organise.

Nonetheless my girl and I put our names up along with every body else and to this day are still waiting for confirmation on the comps, but for some reason I don’t think she’ll call.

What now, What about the blog, what about the pictures. Well all that I can say is the we at Cheese Monkey Joowish ® would like to apologize for the inconvenience and as a token of goodwill we will be giving away four FREE tickets to the next IFS happening in July to the first four members of the blog to invite 35 friends each to join the blog permanently http://cheesemonkeyjoowish.blogspot.com
Now to add fuel to the fire, since it will be winter, the first to invite 70 people to join the blog will be rewarded with two one of kind CMJ cardigans from the 2010 Kalarz winter range been distributed from end March 2010. The competition closes ends 25 April 2010 and please remember to upload the names of the people that you have invited to join on the Cheese Monkey Joowish® facebook groupor on the blog comments section.

So get joining guys and see you and the next IFS. From the guy who writes these rantings and my lil boy pictured at the bottom. Peace I'm off to my acupuncture session!

Mid night THESIS on SOWETO

Hi Everybody

The past two weeks have been hectic with plans to have my brands winter range ready for eager fashionistas to get hold of, as a result my picture blog has been victim of some neglect (although minor i assure you).

Fortunately whilst visiting one of my old High- School mates I ran into a brand that seems to be making major moves in the township which goes by the name of THESIS. I took these pictures in the early hours of Sunday morning at around 01:25am (SEE BELOW).

I really loved how peaceful SOWETO can be at such Early hours. I didn't get to be up close with the merchandise on display for obvious reasons, but everything looked stunning even from afar and under the start light. The shop is very nicely laid out and very well themed with old vinyls hovering like fashion Valkyries above the clothing rails. This same music theme extends as far as having a music rack where buyers can purchase some of the albums on offer I just hoping that the a local artists considering the vast array of music talent we have in the country and what better place to showcase this that in a local fashion house.

The shop is very edgy and well situated on the main road in Mofolo which takes you all the way down to Dube (which by the way is one of my favourite neighbourhoods to hang out in) and from what I've heard is also used to host monthly music sessions were supporters and fans of the brand and the musos affiliated with it can come together and socialise in a less formal environment "great concept".

There also have some graffiti/mural art work out side just next to the shop which you will see in some of the pics this theme too has also been incorporated into the interior design with corregated iron used as the perimeter to the change room also donning graffiti.

To the guys at THESIS from CheesemonkeyJowish keep the good work up, personally I be sure to be at the next music session, after all one of my boys from the old neighbourhood (wireless) will be gracing the decks. Not mention that this time I'm might also be able to take advantage of the goods on display. Rock on Gents.

You've go to love this mural, coincidence or co-ordination I don't know but under the street lights it looks great.

This pic here has to be my favourite, the mirror reflection from with the shop makes it seem as though the fashion angels are watching over the merchandise whilst the owners are away.

Chillas while you contemplate your prospective expenditure or should I say investment?

And

I hope you enjoyed those for more pic and details visit their website www.thesis.co.za. I'm sure you'll like what you find lets support local clothing brands and artist.

Watch this space for pics of the International Sales at the Dome coming up on my next update. From the guys who writes these rantings "PEACE" and stay blessed.
It's back to work for me wishing you longevity as a brand peeps later...
